Mercedes M272 & M273 Runner Flap Failure: P2004, P2006 Codes and Your Real Repair Options
If your Mercedes V6 or V8 has thrown a P2004, P2005, or P2006 code, idles rough, and feels like it lost its top end, you are almost certainly looking at the single most common mechanical failure on the M272 and M273 engines: a broken intake manifold runner flap.
This is not a mystery fault. It is a known design weakness, it affects hundreds of thousands of cars, and Mercedes' official answer to it is expensive. This guide covers what actually breaks, how to confirm it, and the three real paths forward — including the honest downsides of the cheap fix.
The symptoms
Runner flap failure rarely leaves you stranded. That is part of why it gets ignored until it gets worse. Typical signs:
- Check engine light with runner-control codes stored
- Rough or unstable idle, sometimes only when cold
- Noticeable loss of power, especially in the mid and upper RPM range
- Delayed or lazy acceleration
- Increased fuel consumption
- Emissions test failure
The severity depends on which position the flap is stuck in. A flap stuck open behaves differently from one stuck closed, which is why two cars with the same broken part can feel quite different.

Mercedes' own diagnostic wording refers to the tumble flap shafts sticking in the actuated position. If you see P2004 or P2006 stored together with a position-sensor code, that combination strongly suggests the flaps are physically stuck rather than electrically misreporting.
Which cars are affected
Any Mercedes running the M272 V6 or M273 V8 is a candidate, broadly across the 2005–2015 production window:
- C230, C280, C300, C350 (W203 / W204)
- E350 (W211 / W212)
- CLK350 (W209)
- SLK280, SLK300, SLK350 (R171)
- ML350, ML450, GL450, R350
- M273 V8 models sharing the same resonance manifold design
What actually breaks
Inside the intake manifold is a set of adjustable flaps — Mercedes calls the assembly a resonance manifold — that change the effective length of the intake runners depending on engine speed. Long runners build low-end torque; short runners help the engine breathe up top. The flaps switch between the two.
They are driven by an external actuator through a linkage. The failure is almost always a small plastic lever in that linkage snapping. Once it breaks, the flaps stop moving, the position sensor reports an impossible state, and the ECU sets a code.
There is a second, less visible failure mode that matters more: the flap shafts inside the manifold seize in their bores. When that happens, the linkage is being asked to move something that will not move, which is frequently what snaps the lever in the first place. Replace the lever without addressing a seized shaft and you have treated the symptom, not the cause.
The failure mode worth taking seriously: if flap components break loose inside the manifold, debris can be drawn into a cylinder. Independent Mercedes technicians have reported cases requiring valve work as a result. This is the main argument for not letting a known runner flap fault sit for months — the cheap problem can become an expensive one.
Your three real options
1. Dealer replacement — complete new manifold
This is the official fix and it does solve the problem. It is also the most expensive route by a wide margin, and it replaces the failed design with the same design. You may well be doing this again later. It makes the most sense on a newer, low-mileage car you intend to keep stock.
2. Runner flap repair kit — lever and linkage
The budget route, and genuinely the right call for plenty of owners. A repair kit replaces the broken lever and connecting hardware for a fraction of a new manifold, and metal replacement levers are widely available to address the original plastic weak point.
The honest caveat: a repair kit fixes the linkage, not the shafts. If your flap shafts have seized inside the manifold — which is often what broke the lever — a kit can fail again fairly quickly. Before ordering one, pull the engine cover and check whether the flaps actually move freely. If they bind, a lever alone will not save you.
3. High-flow manifold — delete the flaps entirely
Rather than repairing a mechanism that is known to fail, this route removes it. A high-flow induction manifold eliminates the runner flap system altogether, which means the failure cannot recur, and opens up airflow across the RPM range at the same time.
The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly: you give up some of the variable-runner low-end torque advantage, and to get the airflow benefit back as usable power you need ECU calibration to match. Done properly — manifold, larger throttle body, and a tune — M272 owners see meaningful gains rather than marginal ones. Done without a tune, you have paid for airflow the ECU will not use.
So which should you pick?
A straightforward way to decide:
- Flaps still move freely, broken lever only, car is stock and staying stock → repair kit. Cheapest correct answer.
- Shafts binding or seized, or this is your second failure → do not repeat the repair kit. Replace or delete.
- You were already considering performance work on the car → the high-flow manifold route turns a repair bill into an upgrade, which is the only option here that leaves you better off than before it broke.
