AIRMATIC Visit Workshop? The Complete W211 / CLS Coilover Conversion Guide
Your E-Class or CLS is sitting on the ground in the driveway, the cluster says AIRMATIC VISIT WORKSHOP, and the dealer quote has four digits in it. Here's the permanent fix, the one part almost everybody forgets to order, and the fuse that makes the warning go away.
What is actually failing
AIRMATIC on the W211 E-Class and C219 CLS is a good system when it works. It uses an air spring at each corner, a compressor, a valve block, ride-height sensors, and a control module. On a car that is now fifteen to twenty years old, the failure is almost always age and rubber: the air bellows develops a pinhole, the car sags overnight, the compressor runs longer and longer trying to keep up, and eventually the compressor burns itself out doing it.
Typical symptoms:
- One corner (usually a rear) sits low after the car sits overnight
- AIRMATIC Visit Workshop or Vehicle Too Low in the instrument cluster
- Compressor running constantly, or a long labored whine at startup
- Harsh, floaty, or uneven ride
- Car will not raise at all
The real trap is that these parts fail sequentially. You replace one strut, enjoy it for a year, and the next corner goes. Then the compressor. Then the valve block. That is what turns AIRMATIC into a money pit — not one repair, but four or five spread across a few years.
Two honest paths forward
Path A — stay on air
Rebuilt and aftermarket air struts exist, some with long or lifetime warranties, and they work. If your car is a comfort-first daily driver, you genuinely like the factory ride, and you only plan to keep it a few more years, this is a legitimate choice. You keep the self-leveling and the factory ride character.
Path B — convert to coilovers
You delete the air system entirely and run conventional springs and dampers. One-time cost, never fails the same way again, sheds roughly 30 lb of system weight, and gives you ride height and damping adjustment the factory setup never offered. For AMG cars, enthusiast cars, and anyone tired of the cycle, this is the fix. The rest of this guide covers doing it correctly.
The one part everyone forgets: rear lower control arms
This is the single most important paragraph on this page.
AIRMATIC-equipped W211 and C219 cars do not have a spring seat in the rear lower control arms. On an air car the bellows carries the load, so the arm was never designed with a perch for a coil spring. Bolt a coilover kit onto AIRMATIC rear arms and the rear spring has nowhere to sit.
The fix is to swap the rear lower control arms for the non-AIRMATIC steel-spring version — the arm used on a coil-sprung W211 such as an E350. The commonly referenced part number is 2113501806, which has the integrated spring perch.
Practical notes from owners who have done this job:
- Used arms from a coil-spring donor car are the budget route and are usually cheap from a salvage yard — but inspect the bushings. If they are cracked or weeping, you will be doing this job twice.
- New arms cost more per side but arrive with fresh bushings and hardware.
- Complete donor sets often include the bolts, nuts, wire bracket, and covers, which saves an annoying parts run with the car already on the lift.
What about the front arms?
Good news — the front does not require a control arm swap. A proper coilover kit for this chassis includes the correct front assembly with a pillowball top mount that locates in the factory strut tower. Depending on the kit, there may be front shims and retainers in the box that are required for the install, so inventory the kit contents before the car goes up.
Killing the dash warning: fuse F037
Once the air system is gone the AIRMATIC module will fault and the cluster will nag you about it. The widely used fix is to open the driver-side dash fuse box and pull fuse F037. That removes power from the AIRMATIC system and the warnings stop.
The alternative is having the car coded for steel suspension with STAR/XENTRY. Opinions differ on which is cleaner, but the fuse is free, reversible, and takes about two minutes.
Hard fitment rule: this does not fit 4MATIC
Coilover conversion kits for the W211/C219 chassis are for rear-wheel-drive cars only. They will not fit 4MATIC all-wheel-drive models. If your car is a 4MATIC, stop here and contact us before you order anything.

Cost and labor reality
Numbers owners actually report: coilover kits around the $1,000 mark, rear arms anywhere from under $100 for a used pair to a few hundred new, and install labor typically quoted at four to six hours — sometimes closer to eight if the rear air components fight the tech. All-in, most people land somewhere between roughly $1,900 and $2,900 depending on kit choice and whether they source used arms.
Set that against a staged AIRMATIC repair cycle where a single genuine front strut is a four-figure part before labor, and the math usually makes itself.
What it actually rides like
Set soft, a quality monotube coilover on this chassis rides close to the factory air setup — owners routinely describe full-soft as comparable to AIRMATIC, with more body control and less float. Wound firm it is clearly sportier than stock. The bigger win is consistency: the ride no longer depends on whether a bellows is holding pressure today.
You do give up factory self-leveling and load compensation. If you regularly carry heavy loads in the trunk, that is worth knowing going in.

- K-Mac rear multi-link bushing kit (W211) — tightens up a 20-year-old rear end
- Front strut tower brace (W211) — sharpens turn-in now that the front is actually controlled
- Stainless braided brake lines (E55 W211) or the E320/E350/E500/E550 W211 set
