Mercedes GLC Parking Sensor Replacement: Why the Rear Fails First

The GLC gets parking sensor faults for slightly different reasons than the sedans do. It is an SUV that gets used like one — loaded, reversed up to things, fitted with hitches, parked nose-in on gravel — and the rear bumper takes most of that.

Roughly 2016 through 2022, covering GLC300, GLC350e, GLC43 AMG and GLC63 AMG / GLC63 S. Both body styles use the same sensor family, and the AMG variants share it with the GLC300.

The part number

Rear positions and front inner positions take A0009055504. The two front outer corners take A0009055604 — different part, one digit apart, easy to get wrong.

Since most GLC sensor failures we see are at the rear, the practical answer for most owners is that A0009055504 is the part you want and the distinction never comes up.

Why the rear goes first on these

A few things stack up on an SUV that do not on a sedan.

Height and exposure. The rear bumper sits where road spray and salt hit hardest, and the sensors face down into it.

Towing and hitches. An aftermarket hitch that sits in the detection field will produce permanent false alerts that look exactly like a failed sensor and are not. Before you order anything, check whether the beeping started when the hitch went on. A correctly positioned factory tow package should not do this — a poorly located aftermarket one will.

Loading damage. Sliding heavy items in and out over the rear bumper eventually finds the sensors. Physical damage to the sensor face is worth a look before you go diagnostic.

Mud and packed debris. Ultrasonic sensors cannot see through a caked-on layer. If a GLC has been anywhere near a trail or a wet building site, clean the bumper properly and retest before you buy a part. This is genuinely a common false alarm on these.

Finding the failed sensor

Ignition on, into reverse to arm the system, and rest a fingertip on each sensor in turn. A working one gives a faint rapid tick you can feel. A dead one is silent.

A Mercedes-capable scanner will name the position directly. A generic OBD-II reader will not — Parktronic sits on a bus those tools cannot reach, so getting no codes back does not mean there is no fault.

One dead sensor stops the whole system

The control module tests every sensor on start-up. One that fails to answer takes the entire array offline rather than leaving you with partial coverage and no way to know which corner is blind. So a completely dead system with a red display is usually one cheap sensor, not a module.

Before you order

Count the sensors in your bumper. Layout varies with the options package, and the GLC was sold with a wide spread of specification.

Rule out the simple stuff first — debris, a hitch, physical damage, and any recent bodywork. Sensors are supplied unpainted and are meant to be colour-matched, but a heavy coat damps the ultrasonic signal until they stop working. Keep it under roughly 120 microns of total film.

Confirm the number rather than the model. Build date and options both matter. Pull one sensor and read the number moulded into the body, or send us a VIN.

Getting to the sensors means the bumper comes off, and that is where the labour sits. On a car this age, a sensor that has failed has five siblings of identical age and exposure behind the same bumper. Doing them together is the cheaper decision by a wide margin.
