Mercedes Window Regulator Failure: Repair Kit vs. Full Assembly
Your Mercedes Window Is Slow, Crooked, or Just Dropped Into the Door. Now What?
Window regulator failure on Mercedes models from this era almost always announces itself the same way. First the glass gets slow and makes a faint clicking or grinding on the way up. Then it starts rising crooked, one corner leading the other. Finally, one day, it lets go entirely — the glass drops into the door and won't come back up. If you're reading this in a parking lot with a window that won't close, you have our sympathy, and you have two ways to fix it.
Why These Regulators Fail
The regulator is the scissor-and-cable mechanism inside the door that converts the motor's rotation into the glass moving up and down. The metal frame and the electric motor in these assemblies are genuinely durable — what gives out are the small plastic guide components the cables run through. Two decades of heat cycles make the plastic brittle, a piece cracks, cable tension goes, and the glass loses its support. That failure pattern is exactly why two different fixes exist.
Option 1: The Repair Kit — When the Motor Still Works
If your motor still whirs when you press the switch but the glass moves wrong (or not at all), the mechanism is usually the only casualty. For the 2003–2009 CLK (C209 coupe and A209 cabriolet — CLK320, CLK500, CLK550, CLK55 AMG, CLK63 AMG), we stock rear regulator repair kits for each side:
- 03–09 Mercedes CLK Rear Left Window Regulator Repair Kit — $24.99
- 03–09 Mercedes CLK Rear Right Window Regulator Repair Kit — $24.99
The kit replaces the failure-prone components while you keep your original motor and frame — see each listing for exact kit contents. At $24.99 against several hundred for a complete assembly, it's the first thing to try when the motor is healthy. It's an afternoon job with hand tools for a patient DIYer: door card off, glass supported, worn components swapped, everything back together. Our CLK repair kit guide walks through the decision in more detail.
Option 2: The Complete Used OEM Assembly — When the Motor's Gone or the Frame's Bent
A repair kit can't help you if the motor is dead (no sound at all from the switch), if the regulator frame itself is bent or cracked, or if your chassis predates the kits we stock. That's where a complete used OEM assembly is the honest answer — original Mercedes hardware, pulled working, with the motor included where listed:
- 99–03 CLK320 / CLK430 Rear Left Window Regulator — OEM 208 670 01 03 (W208) — $549.95
- 99–03 CLK Rear Right Quarter Window Regulator & Motor — OEM 208 670 02 03 (W208, fits CLK320 / CLK430 / CLK55 AMG) — $299.95
- 00–06 CL500 / CL55 / CL600 / CL65 Rear Left Window Regulator & Motor (C215) — $195.00
Why used OEM instead of a cheap aftermarket regulator? Because the aftermarket units fail the same way the originals eventually did — only faster, with softer plastic and looser cable tolerances. A genuine assembly that ran for years in a donor car has already proven its build quality. Our used OEM regulator buying guide covers what to check before you order.
Which One Do You Need? 30-Second Decision
| Symptom | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| Motor runs, glass slow / crooked / clicking | Repair kit (03–09 CLK) |
| Motor runs, glass dropped into door | Repair kit first — inspect frame once the door is open |
| No motor sound at all | Complete assembly with motor |
| Frame visibly bent or cracked | Complete assembly |
| 99–03 CLK (W208) or 00–06 CL (C215) | Complete used OEM assembly (listed above) |
Left, Right, Front, Rear — Order the Correct One
Regulators are side- and position-specific and do not interchange. On US cars, left = driver side, right = passenger side, always described as if you're sitting in the car. Check which door is failing before ordering, and match the part number stamped on your original where possible — the dealer-format number (e.g. 208 670 01 03) is printed in each of our listings.
Don't See Your Model?
Our used OEM inventory turns over constantly. If your chassis or side isn't listed above, send us your year, model, and VIN and we'll source it — that's what the special-order service exists for. Browse everything currently in stock in OEM & Replacement Parts and Interior Trim & Accessories.
