Mercedes Parking Sensor Beeping Constantly? Here's What's Actually Wrong
The short answer
If your Parktronic display has gone red and the system beeps for no reason — or has stopped working entirely — you are almost certainly looking at one failed ultrasonic sensor. Not the module, not the wiring, and not something that needs a dealer.
The confusing part is that one dead sensor takes down the whole system. That leads a lot of owners to assume the fault must be something bigger and more expensive than it is.
What owners actually report
- Constant false beeping with nothing behind the car
- One side dead or blank on the display
- A "Parktronic malfunction" or "Parking sensors not available" message
- Red segments only on the graphic, no distance readout
Why one bad sensor kills all of them
The sensors in your bumpers share a bus back to the Parktronic control module, and the module runs a self-test on every one of them each time you start the car. If a sensor fails to answer that test, the module has no safe way to offer partial coverage — it cannot tell you "everything works except the rear left corner" and trust you to compensate. So it shuts the whole array down and flags a fault.
That is why a $15 part presents like a $900 problem. The system is behaving exactly as designed.
Finding the dead one
Three methods, cheapest first.
1. The finger test
Turn the ignition on and put the car in reverse so the system arms. Rest a fingertip lightly on each sensor in turn. A working sensor produces a faint, rapid ticking you can feel through your finger, and often hear if the street is quiet. A dead sensor is completely silent.
Work along the bumper methodically. Most people find the culprit in under two minutes.
2. A scanner that actually talks to Parktronic
Worth knowing before you buy one: a generic OBD-II code reader will not do this. Parktronic sits on a separate bus from the engine management most cheap readers are built for. You need a Mercedes-capable tool — an iCarsoft MB unit or similar. Those will name the position outright, as in "front inner right," and save you the guesswork.
3. The swap test
If you already have a spare or a known-good sensor, move it into the suspect position, clear the codes, and see whether the fault follows the old sensor to its new home. If it does, you have found your answer without buying a tool.
When it is not the sensor
A few situations look identical from the driver's seat but will not be fixed by a new sensor.
- Every sensor is silent. If none of them tick, suspect a fuse, the module, or a wiring fault rather than six simultaneous failures.
- The fault appears the instant you start the car, every time, regardless of conditions. Sensor failures are often intermittent at first. A hard fault from cold start points at wiring or the module.
- Snow, ice, mud, or a thick layer of road grime. Ultrasonic sensors cannot see through packed debris. Clean the bumper and try again before ordering anything.
- The car has recently had bodywork or a bumper respray. This one catches a lot of people — see below.
- An aftermarket tow bar or hitch is fitted. A rear-mounted hitch sits in the detection field and can trigger permanent false alerts.
The respray trap
Mercedes supplies these sensors unpainted and specifies painting before installation, so the face of the sensor is meant to carry colour. But it has to be a thin coat. Ultrasonic sensors transmit through their own front face, and a heavy paint build damps the signal until the sensor either reads short or stops responding altogether. The working figure is to stay under roughly 120 microns of total film thickness.
If your parking sensors died shortly after a bumper repair, that is very likely your answer, and no amount of diagnosis will find a wiring fault that is not there.
Check your part number before you order
This is where most people lose money on an otherwise simple job.
Mercedes did not use one sensor across the range, and did not even use one sensor across a single bumper. On a typical six-sensor layout, the rear positions and the front inner positions take A0009055504, while the two front outer corners take a different part, A0009055604. They look nearly identical side by side.
There are others in circulation too — A2125420018, A2215420417, and the newer colour-coded A2239054000 among them — and the same model year can carry different numbers depending on build date and options package.
So do not order off your model name. Pull the sensor you are replacing and read the number moulded into the body, or send your VIN to whoever you are buying from and let them confirm it. Our full PDC part number guide breaks down which number goes where.

This sensor turns up across most of the modern Mercedes range. Treat the list below as a starting point rather than a guarantee — build date, options package and bumper position all affect which number your specific car takes, and the front outer corners are a different part on many of these.

What it should cost
A single sensor from a Mercedes dealer runs well into double figures before labour. The part itself is not complicated and there is no reason to pay dealer pricing for it.
The other thing worth thinking about: sensors fail from age and road exposure, not bad luck. If one has gone at eight years old, the other five in that bumper are also eight years old and have seen the same weather and the same road salt. The bumper is already coming off to do the job. Doing the set while you are in there costs a fraction of doing it again in eighteen months.
