Collection: AMG M177 4.0L V8 BiTurbo — C63 / E63 / GLC63 / GT 63

M177 4.0L V8 BiTurbo — C63, E63, GLC63 & GT 63

The M177 is AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with both turbochargers mounted inside the V rather than outside the heads. That layout is short, compact and quick to spool — and it puts two turbochargers in the hottest part of the engine bay. Almost every meaningful upgrade for this engine is a response to one of those two facts.

This is the engine hub for the whole M177 range. Downpipes and calibration on the airflow side; heat exchangers, auxiliary radiators, methanol and turbo blankets on the heat side. Both matter, and on a tuned car the heat side usually matters more than owners expect.

Exhaust fitment follows drivetrain, not just chassis. A rear-drive C63 and a 4MATIC+ E63 route the downpipes differently, so downpipe listings here are split by platform rather than sold as one universal part. Buy the listing that names your car. Intakes, filters, cooling and tuning follow the engine and cross over more freely — but the listing still states it.

M177 or M178?

Both are AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8s and they share a great deal. The M178 is the dry-sump version fitted to the AMG GT, GT S, GT C and GT R sports cars; the M177 is the wet-sump version in the sedans, coupes and SUVs above. Parts are not automatically interchangeable between them. If you drive an AMG GT sports car rather than a GT 63 4-door, start here instead: AMG GT / GTS / GTC / GTR (M178) →

Where to start

Airflow first

Downpipes and a matching calibration are the largest single step on a stock M177. A drop-in filter or intake spacer is the cheapest entry point and keeps the factory airbox. The full 3" dual intake goes further and is the bigger commitment.

Then heat

Turbos inside the V means intake temperatures climb fast under repeated load. Front-mount and auxiliary heat exchangers, CSF auxiliary radiators and turbo blankets exist to stop a tuned car pulling timing on the second and third pull. C63 cooling upgrades →

Methanol for high output

Methanol and water-methanol injection add charge cooling and knock resistance beyond what a heat exchanger alone can do. This is territory for already-tuned cars, not a first modification. Methanol injection →

Turbo upgrades last

Stage 1 and Stage 2 billet turbo upgrades assume the supporting airflow, cooling and fuelling are already sorted. Fitted to an otherwise stock car they are the wrong first purchase.

Emissions notice — catless parts in this collection.

Catless downpipes and headers remove the catalytic converters. They are not 50-state legal, hold no CARB Executive Order, and are not legal for use on a vehicle registered or operated on public roads in the United States. They are sold for closed-course competition and off-road use only. A vehicle fitted with them will not pass an emissions or OBD inspection, and will set a fault code without a matching ECU calibration.
